The City of Prince Rupert is speaking out after a donated wood carving, unveiled just a week ago, was found damaged in a local park. The artwork, titled Survival of the Fittest, was created by chainsaw artist Jarette Dahl and gifted to the city by Chetwynd as part of the North Central Local Government Association conference held earlier this month.
Installed in the green space near the hospital, the piece highlights northern wildlife and was intended as a symbol of friendship between communities. City leaders say they are deeply disappointed by the damage, especially given the carving’s role in representing shared cultural values and regional unity.
Officials are currently evaluating how serious the damage is and will be working closely with the artist and the Chetwynd delegation to coordinate repairs. The city is also urging residents to come forward with any information that might help identify those responsible.
The carving’s defacement is a blow to the spirit of the gift, which was meant to leave a lasting, positive impression on the community. While no timeline has been set, the City remains committed to restoring the piece and preserving its meaning.
