Newmont Corp. is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its Red Chris copper-gold mine with an $8 million investment in the Tahltan communities of Dease Lake, Iskut, and Telegraph Creek. The funds will support key community projects, including recreation facilities, greenhouses, and improvements to housing. Tahltan Central Government President Beverly Slater praised the initiative, saying it shows Newmont’s commitment to listening to the community and addressing local needs. Red Chris, operating under a co-management agreement, has become a cornerstone for the Tahltan Nation, employing over 220 local residents and generating approximately $100 million annually for the Tahltan Nation Development Corp. The partnership is also a global model for integrating Indigenous leadership in resource development, balancing economic progress with environmental stewardship. Newmont’s $8 million investment underscores its commitment to building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with the communities it operates in, ensuring the success of both the mine and the region’s residents.
