After several months of delays, crews have resumed demolition at Kitimat’s Nechako Centre on May 14. The work, which was initially scheduled to start in November 2024, faced setbacks due to engineering concerns, prompting the contractor to revise the work plan. Demolition is now expected to continue through June 3, with parts of the parking lot closed off during this time. The District of Kitimat also advises residents to expect increased traffic on nearby streets, including Plover, Oriole, and Pintail, during school hours.
The Nechako Centre, once a bustling commercial area in the Nechako neighbourhood, began declining in use in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A market assessment and concept plan completed in 2022 set the stage for redevelopment, focusing on mixed-use spaces, recreational facilities, and public infrastructure. The development plan, approved in late 2023, will examine the technical and infrastructural requirements of the site. The District’s vision for the area includes creating new gathering spaces, green areas, and enhancing the community’s overall infrastructure.
