BC Parks is prioritizing inclusion and accessibility in northern BC, with key upgrades in parks across Terrace, Smithers, and other regions. As part of its ongoing efforts to make outdoor spaces more inclusive, accessible parking, trails, and facilities have been introduced in parks such as Ross Lake Park and Jimsmith Lake Park. These improvements are part of a broader effort to make BC Parks accessible to everyone, regardless of ability.
BC Parks is also collaborating with the BC Parks Foundation and the Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre to offer virtual park tours in American Sign Language (ASL). The program, which began at Goldstream Park, is expanding to additional parks, allowing those who are deaf or hard of hearing to connect with nature in a meaningful way.
This summer, BC Parks will hold its Learn-to-be-in-Nature events in Terrace on June 17 and in Smithers on July 5. These events provide a fun, supportive environment for newcomers to Canada to learn about outdoor recreation and environmental practices. With these initiatives, BC Parks is ensuring that more people in northern communities can experience and enjoy the province’s natural landscapes.
