The newly opened Nats’oojeh Hospital and Health Centre in Fort St. James has closed its Emergency Department just two days after its official opening. The facility, which opened its doors on Jan 14, is facing staffing challenges, and the closure will lasted until 8 a.m. this morning and has since reopened.
The hospital, named after the Dakelh word for “everyone healing,” was officially celebrated on May 23 with the attendance of Minister of Health Josie Osborne. The event highlighted the collaboration between local First Nations and healthcare leaders to create a space reflecting cultural values alongside modern care. Despite the temporary closure of the emergency services, alternative care options are available, including the NH Virtual Primary & Community Care Clinic and the First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day program.
The new hospital, three times the size of its predecessor, boasts 27 beds and enhanced diagnostic facilities. While its emergency services are interrupted, officials assure the public that support is in place, and the hospital’s long-term commitment to the community remains strong.
