A mother in Fort St. John, B.C., is speaking out after her son’s injury was mishandled at the local hospital, leading to growing concerns over the region’s healthcare system. Melanie Jansen’s 15-year-old son, Hudson, fell off his bike on May 6 and suffered severe swelling and pain in his leg. After waiting five hours at the emergency room and receiving X-rays, Hudson was sent home without proper treatment. The next day, the doctor urgently contacted Jansen, recommending Hudson return for a splint. However, after more delays and a five-hour wait, they were sent home again without a splint or further care.
It wasn’t until May 14, more than a week later, that an orthopedic surgeon discovered Hudson had a broken bone, which had worsened due to the delay. Jansen’s experience sparked a flood of similar complaints, with many locals citing long wait times and misdiagnoses. MLA Jordan Kealy has expressed support for a review of the local healthcare system, as residents demand action to address the ongoing issues. Northern Health confirmed the case was reviewed but has not shared the results. Jansen is calling for better care, saying the current system is not meeting the community’s needs.
