LNG Canada is entering a major commissioning phase at its Kitimat facility, with increased flaring activity expected through the summer. Starting May 15 and continuing until July 31, the company will be testing and bringing online key systems, including its Boil-Off Gas Compressor and the first LNG processing unit, known as Train 1.
During this phase, flare height is expected to vary between 20 and 60 metres as natural gas is safely burned off during equipment testing. Residents in the surrounding area may notice louder operational noise and more visible emissions, both of which LNG Canada says are typical during this kind of start-up process.
The flaring is a controlled and temporary part of advancing the facility toward full operation. Once complete, the Kitimat plant will become the first LNG export terminal in Canada, marking a significant milestone for the country’s energy sector.
LNG Canada is encouraging residents to reach out if they have concerns or questions. More information is available through their contact line and website, where updates on flaring and other start-up activities are being shared throughout this commissioning period.
