As the Victoria Day long weekend approaches, officials are urging both residents and travelers in BC to prioritize safety due to increasing wildfire risks.
Currently, 28 wildfires are active across the province, with nine considered out of control.
Fire bans are in place, including a Category 3 open-burning prohibition in the Kamloops Fire Centre, effective from May 16.
Authorities are asking the public to stay informed about road closures, evacuation alerts, and changing weather conditions, which can affect wildfire activity.
For travelers, the BC Wildfire Service mobile app offers real-time updates on current wildfire activity, road conditions, and weather forecasts, while also allowing people to report fires or smoke sightings.
In addition to following fire restrictions, residents are advised to take steps to protect their properties by clearing dry leaves and debris, keeping flammable materials like propane tanks away from structures, and watering trees and shrubs within local restrictions.
With below-average rainfall across the province, there are also concerns over drought conditions, so water conservation is encouraged.
As the long weekend sees an increase in road traffic, drivers should prepare for delays, make sure their vehicles are road-ready, and remain cautious on the roads.
