A significant infrastructure upgrade is underway in Prince Rupert with the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and McBride Street. This $18 million project, which will begin construction this spring, is designed to enhance safety, traffic flow, and pedestrian access in one of the city’s busiest areas. Traffic re-routing will begin on May 15th, and the roundabout is expected to be completed by fall 2026.
The new roundabout will replace the existing three-way intersection, improving both vehicle and pedestrian movement. Key features include a 3-meter multi-use pathway, bike ramps, new LED streetlights, and two new bus shelters. Crosswalks with push-activated flashing beacons and tactile walking surface indicator mats will make crossings safer for all pedestrians, including those with vision impairments.
In addition to the transportation upgrades, the project will address critical underground infrastructure, including water, storm, and sewer systems, in partnership with the City of Prince Rupert. The roundabout project also aligns with provincial goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote active transportation, and support the local economy. This initiative is part of broader efforts to revitalize the city’s downtown area while improving overall infrastructure and accessibility.
