Kitimat RCMP are continuing their investigation into a targeted assault and reports of gunfire in the early morning hours of April 29th.
At approximately 12:20 a.m., officers were called to the 80-block of Baxter Avenue after reports of gunshots. Evidence at the scene confirmed that a firearm had been discharged outside a building. No victims were located at the time.
Later that morning, police received another call reporting an injured individual who said they had been in the Baxter Avenue area a few hours earlier. The victim was transported to hospital with injuries.
After gathering evidence and identifying a suspect, police made an arrest on May 1st with help from the North District Emergency Response Team. A 27-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault and remains in custody following a bail hearing on May 2nd. The accused and the victim are known to each other.
RCMP believe this was a targeted incident and stress that there is no ongoing risk to the public. The investigation is still active. Anyone with information, or who may have dash cam or surveillance footage from the area, is asked to contact Kitimat RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
