A group of health professional students from across B.C. is bringing healthcare career opportunities to secondary schools in the northwest. The Healthcare Travelling Roadshow, led by UBC Northern Medical Program students, is visiting Caledonia Secondary School in Terrace today. This week, the team will also stop at schools in Kitimat, the Nass Valley, and Lax Kw’alaams.
The Roadshow aims to educate students about various healthcare careers through interactive demonstrations, highlighting fields such as dental hygiene, cardiology technology, medical laboratory science, radiography technology, nursing, medicine, midwifery, and more. The initiative was created in 2010 by Dr. Sean Maurice to address rural healthcare workforce shortages and has since connected with over 12,000 students in 68 communities across B.C.
The Roadshow is a collaborative effort between the Northern Medical Programs Trust, Rural Education Action Plan, Interior Health, UNBC, and UBC Faculty of Medicine. Through hands-on experiences, it encourages local students to explore healthcare careers and consider returning to their communities to help meet local healthcare needs in the future.
