Northern Health is working to address recent emergency room closures at St. John Hospital in Vanderhoof. Since the start of 2025, there have been three service interruptions, two due to staffing shortages and one in late January caused by patient acuity, which involves an overwhelming number of emergency cases. The most recent closure occurred on March 26 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Northern Health emphasizes that such closures are a last resort, occurring when all other options to keep the ER open have been exhausted. To prevent future disruptions, Northern Health is exploring solutions like recruitment incentives, virtual care options, and expanded use of agency and locum staff. When the ER is closed, patients are informed via signage and are directed to call 911 for transport.
