Northern Health has issued a drug advisory after pills sold as Oxycocet tested positive for isotonitazene, a synthetic opioid that is more toxic than fentanyl. This substance cannot be detected by fentanyl test strips and poses a serious overdose risk.
Residents are urged to carry naloxone, which can reverse the effects of isotonitazene, and to seek training on its use. It’s also recommended not to use drugs alone and to inform someone trusted or use safety apps like Lifeguard or BeSafe. If possible, individuals should use Overdose Prevention Sites (OPS). It’s important to know your tolerance, especially if you’ve had a break from using. Mixing drugs or using with alcohol increases the risk of overdose.
If an overdose occurs, call 9-1-1 immediately. The advisory expires on April 10, 2025. For OPS hours, visit the Northern Health website.
