Members of First Nations communities subject to long-term drinking water advisories are running out of time to register for compensation.
Originally approved in 2021, the First Nations Drinking Water Settlement includes $1.8 billion in compensation for impacted Nations and members.
It seeks to compensate members of most Nations covered under an advisory for at least one year between November of 1995 and June of 2021.
Eligible Nations in the Northwest include: the Kitsumkalum and Skidegate Bands, the Kitasoo Xai’Xais and Wet’suwet’en First Nations, and more.

Last year, the deadline to submit a compensation claim was extended to March 7th of next year.

Another $6 billion is also included in the settlement to go towards upgrades, maintenance, and operation of services on First Nations land.
