It’s been a rough few months for the forestry industry, with Tolko Industries becoming the most recent company to feel the burn.
Workers at Tolko’s Soda Creek Lumber Mill were informed today that the facility would be dropping from two shifts to one.
That comes just one day after they introduced an identical cut for workers at their Armstrong Mill, which were announced last week.
While they haven’t yet determined a date for when the cuts will take effect in Soda Creek, Tolko does expect them to be permanent.
Between the two locations, the shift reductions will impact roughly 130 employees, and potentially reduce lumber production by 100 million board feet.
Tolko cites a lack of economic fibre, high log costs, and a weak lumber market as reasons for the reductions.
