A couple from Prince George is sharing their experience with the University Hospital of Northern BC after having to travel for a second opinion.
According to the couple, both Paladin security and northern health staff were not compassionate in their treatment of the patient.
They say that both a guard and nurse demanded that they either sit in a chair or leave when the patient tried to alleviate back pain by laying on the ground.
The patient’s partner also said that during the examination, the nurse was unprofessional when comparing their fall with the experience of the patient.
Dealing with the lower back pain for over a year, the patient was told by the nurse that the issue was muscular and was advised to try another CT scan and physiotherapy.
Unhappy with their treatment, the patient traveled to Vanderhoof where an abnormality was found before eventually being diagnosed with a spinal tumor at Vancouver General Hospital.
In a written response, Northern Health says that they’re aware of the concerns initially raised on social media, and that they cannot comment on individual patient experiences in order to maintain privacy.
Though they say that they are committed to creating care spaces that are respective and culturally sensitive and urge people with concerns to contact the Northern Health Patient Care Quality Office.
