An estimated 110,000 Litres of gasoline may have seeped underground in Quesnel after a fuel leak went undetected for a year and a half.
That leak began during the installation of new fuel tanks at Lhtako Gas and Convenience in December of 2020, but wasn’t discovered until last June.
According to the Lhtako Dene Nation, the leak has since been repaired, and assessments are underway to determine the extent of the contamination.
Tests performed on the community water supply revealed no contamination, but the same may not be true for some neighbouring wells.
SLR Consulting has been retained by the Nation to conduct environmental investigations at the site and on adjacent lands.
So far, they have discovered gasoline-related contamination in groundwater along Arbutus Road, and in at least one nearby water well.
Neighbouring residents with a well are being urged to have SLR test their supply.
