First Nations leadership are not happy with Canada’s plan to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Attendees of the Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly were presented with the initial draft of the plan last week.
Due by June 21st, the final plan will lay out the actions Canada will take to ensure all Federal laws are in line with the Declaration.
But Chiefs walked away disappointed with the lack of meaningful consultation involved in the process.
They also took issue with some of the language in the draft, particularly that around free, prior and informed consent.
An emergency resolution passed on Thursday will see leaders call for Ottawa to delay the plan, or allow for further consultation on amendments.
But the exact wording of the resolution will remain unclear until it receives the approval of National Chief RoseAnne Archibald.
