Minister of Transportation Rob Fleming tabled bill 23 today to amend the Motor Vehicle Act.
Proposed amendments include increased safety measures for pedestrians and cyclists like a one metre minimum passing distance and three metre minimum following distance.
It will also see expanded provincial authority to enable and regulate pilot projects to test new and emerging technologies and road safety policies.
An example of those technologies would be delivery robots and personal mobility devices to transform the provinces transportation network.
The changes are also part of CleanBC’s emission reduction plan by requiring heavy duty commercial vehicles to use a speed limiter to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
If approved, the legislation would also enable the province to regulate automated vehicles including insurance, licensing, prohibition, and permitting.
