Following Minister of Safety Mike Farnworths announcement last week, BC’s convenience retailers are once again raising concerns of illegal tobacco sales.
Last Tuesday, Minister Farnworth announced $25 million to address community safety concerns.
Now BC’s convenience retailers are asking to use a portion of that funding for public education to prevent involvment in the illegal tobacco trade.
Along with an annual tax revenue loss of $275 million, the Convenience Retailers Alliance 4 Safe Communities says that a lack of penalties and enforcement can foster an environment geared towards crime.
The alliance asked that funding be put aside for campaigns like television ads, social media campaigns, and educational literature about the dangers of contraband tobacco.
