The province is taking action to prevent local shortages of the type 2 diabetes treatement Ozempic during a national shortage.
Believed to be caused by increasing popularity for it’s weight loss side effects, the drug is currently facing a national shortage.
BC’s PharmaNet Data indicates a rise in dispenses of the drug, specifically to US residents.
15 per cent of prescriptions filled were purchased by US residents, where as other drugs sit at just 0.4 percent.
For that reason, Minister of Health Adrian Dix says that amendments will be made to further regulate the sale of the drug to non-canadian residents to ensure that those who need the drug can access it.
Currently, pharmacies in BC can fill prescriptions written by US doctors if co-signed by a Canadian Practitioner and account for 88 percent of all dispenses to US residents.
