Job losses due to the shutdown of Prince George’s Canfor pulp line are lower than projected.
Out of 220 union jobs that were expected to be eliminated, some workers accepted early retirement packages, or left on their own accord due to uncertainty within the industry.
That results in 90 union employees being let go and is also expected to affect 80 management and union-exempt staff.
President of the Private and Public Workers of Canada Local 9 says that those accepting packages are also applying for the provincial bridging to retirement program for forestry workers affected by industry downturn.
When the closure was announced in January, Canfor said the pulp and paper mill will be phased out by the end of March.
