Members of the Simpcw and Gitsegukla First Nations came together in ceremony today to celebrate the signing of a new declaration.
Under the declaration, both Nations agree to recognize, respect, and stand up for each other’s inherent jurisdiction over child welfare.
Each Nation will support the other in determining their own path to improving the well-being of children and families, based on their own laws.
Last April, the Simpcw became the first First Nation in BC to enter into a co-created child welfare agreement with the Province.
That agreement, known as Tcwesétmentem, ensures all decision making is done with the Nation’s customs, language, laws and traditions in mind.
In keeping with tradition, the Gitsegukla traded the Simpcw sockeye salmon to enter into the agreement.
