Newly proposed legislation would make it easier for non-binary and gender-diverse people to have their IDs match who they are.
Last January the province made it possible for those aged 12 and older to change the gender marker on their birth certificates, without doctor approval.
If passed, the legislation would amend the Vital Statistics Act to bring it into alignment with those changes.
But it would also alter information requirements, allowing individuals to request a birth certificate with no gender marker at all.
With the changes, the province hopes to make it easier for two-spirit, transgender, intersex, gender-diverse and non-binary residents to access supports and health care.
