Liberal MLA Doug Clovechok is once again attempting to have Indigenous names recognized on official government documents.
Clovechok originally tabled the Indigenous Names Statutes Amendment Act in 2022, but the Private Members’ Bill only recieved one reading.
Currently, the province only allows for the use of Latin characters on official documents, such as birth certificates and drivers’ licenses.
According to government, this is due to inherent limitations with the software used.
But Clovechok says it’s unacceptable that the NDP are willing to run a $4.2 billion deficit, but not to pay for software which allows the use of special characters.
He says that, given the province’s dedication to UNDRIP, restoring the eligibility of traditional names should be a priority.
