Avalanche risks remain high for much of the Northwest today, but are expected to begin improving tomorrow.
According to Avalanche Canada, as much as 200 cms of fresh snow has fallen on top of an already weak lower snowpack over the past two weeks.
That has prompted them to maintain a Danger Rating of 4 for for sections of the north coast west of Kitwanga and north of Hartley Bay.
Stage 4 is the second highest risk level on their scale, and denotes a high likelihood of large avalanches, both natural and human-caused.
Danger ratings for the remainder of the Stikine and Bulkley Valley, as well as most of the Interior, are locked at stage 3, or considerable risk.
Residents should avoid travel in the backcountry, or near large cliffs, slabs, or mountainsides whenever possible.
