BC’s Provincial Health Services Authority has responded to a recent report which points out a number of security vulnerabilities in their database.
Published by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, the report looks into BC’s Public Health Information System.
That system contains a database known as Panorama, which stores sensitive medical information for some 6 million British Columbians.
In addition to personal information, the database also stores details on mental health evaluations, vaccination status, preganancies, and treatment for sexually-transmitted infections.
According the report, it’s security protections fall significantly short of what is necessary to protect the public, leaving it open to misuse and cyber attacks.
PHSA President and CEO David Byres says the system was upgraded in July, and that they are continually adding encryption and mitigating threats.
But, the report, which can be read at this link, says they have known about the security vulnerabilities since an internal audit from 2019.
