Expansions to the Port of Prince Rupert’s shore power system will allow more vessels to power down while docked, reducing emissions by nearly 30,000 tonnes.
Newly installed electrical infrastructure at DP World’s Fairview Container Terminal will extend the system to cover both the north and south berths.
That will allow large container vessels at either berth to plug in to shore power and shut down their main generators, while cargo is loaded and unloaded.
By doing so, the vessels can substantially reduce the amount of harmful exhaust emissions released, significantly lowering the Port’s carbon footprint.
A partnership between the Prince Rupert Port Authority, DP World, and BC Hydro provided roughly $5.4 million toward the project.
In total, the north berth expansion and upgrades to the south berth combined cost roughly $7.6 million, with Ottawa providing the difference.
