Ottawa is investing an additional $10 million into an Indigenous-led climate initiative aimed at reducing emissions in BC.
Established in 2016, the BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative provides support for clean energy development projects in First Nations communities.
They do so while ensuring ownership, community revenue sharing, local employment, and business development benefits are built in to the approval process.
That helps them to create opportunities to allow remote and off-grid communities to increase self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on diesel power.
To date, Canada has invested $18 million into the initiative, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by over 400,000 tonnes.
