In less than two weeks, the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en Nations will come together to honour the 25th anniversary of the Delgamuukw-Gisday’wa Supreme Court Decision.
That landmark decision affirmed the Nations’ ownership and jurisdiction over nearly 60,000 square kms of their traditional territories.
It was also the first comprehensive account of Aboriginal title in the history of Canada’s courts, and defined how oral history in testimony would be used going forward.
Now, the two Nations are set to hold a pair of gatherings to celebrate the victory, and honour the surviving and lost plaintiffs of the 1997 trial.
Those interested in participating can do so at the Witset Multiplex on December 9th, or the Gitanmaax Community Hall the following day.
Events will run from 9:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon each day, and will centre around speeches from the original plaintiffs and lawyers.
Hosted by Peace and Unity, the events will also feature lunch, traditional dancing, and door prizes.
