A group of Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs landed in Six Nations territory in Ontario on Tuesday for the beginning of a cross-Canada tour.
Dubbed the Strengthening our Sovereignty: Nation to Nation Tour, the trip will see them visit a number of other Indigenous communities over 18 days.
During that trip, they will discuss development, land disputes, government challenges, and more issues facing First Nations, as they look to strengthen unity and solidarity.
Their tour began with a meeting with the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council, the first between the two groups in over 30 years.
For years, the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs have led the fight against the development of the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
When tentions related to that flared in 2020, the Haudenosaunee were among a number of groups to stand with the Chiefs and block off roads and railways in solidarity.
While CGL has signed agreements with all elected band councils along the pipeline route, the Hereditary Chiefs maintain that jurisdiction over unceded non-reserve lands lies with them.
