An Indigenous Elder of the Lheidli T’enneh Nation is set to become the next chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia.
Darlene McIntosh will officially be sworn into her new position at a special celebration which will take place on October 21st.
McIntosh already has a significant presence at the University, as she frequently gives speeches on behalf of her First Nation at UNBC events and celebrations.
In addition to the speeches, she was also a key member of the UNBC Lheidli T’enneh Translation Initiative committee, who translated and made a new entrance sign in the Lheidli T’enneh dialect of the Dakelh language at the Prince George campus of the school.
Another role that Elder McIntosh works in is the Cultural Advisor at the College of New Caledonia’s Aboriginal Resource Centre, where she helps provide a safe and welcoming area for faculty, students and staff.
UNBC’s chancellor position is determined by the UNBC Board of Governors and they expressed their happiness with selecting a chancellor with ties to both the community and the school.
