A new $7 million youth centre is now open in Kitamaat Village, after initially breaking ground in June of last year.
Located at the site of the former soccer clubhouse, the new Haisla Youth Centre neighbours the Village’s soccer field.
With often-rough north coast conditions in mind, the facility was built to withstand earthquakes, flooding, heavy snow, and rising ocean levels.
Both indoor and outdoor features were constructed using an interconnected design which leans strongly on Haisla culture and language.
Haisla culture and teachings will also be a focus of programming at the facility, which will feature spaces for counselling, tutoring, and mental health.
Once ready, those services will fill the main floor, alongside recreational activities, and a kitchen which will focus on harvesting, preparing, and serving traditional food.
Funding for the facility was provided by the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund, and the First Nation Health Authority’s Aboriginal Head Start On Reserve grant stream.
