BC’s Auditor General has found that the province has adequately addressed most concerns brought up in a 2016 audit in to mining regulations.
Those findings come in a new follow-up report to that audit released today, which still brings forward five new recommendations.
That report determined that the Ministry has since developed policies and procedures which address key environmental concerns brought forward in the audit.
It also found that they introduced a new framework which adequately manages public risks and environmental concerns at abandoned mines, with one exception.
Since the initial audit, the Ministry has made amendments to the Mines Act, and created the Abandoned Mines Branch, Mines Investigations Unit, and Mines Audit Unit.
But, the report still produced five recommendations, relating to environmental compliance and enforcement, reclamation liabilities, abandoned mines, and updating historical permits.
