BC’s Ministry of Health has sent out new guidelines to pharmacies regarding steps they need to take to protect their supply of specialized baby formula.
Now, pharmacies will be required to keep the formula behind their counters, which will preserve supply and get the formula to families who need them, considering that Canada is currently experiencing a country wide shortage at the moment.
Regular formula is available in abundance in BC but the specialized hypoallergenic infant formula that babies with medical conditions or allergies need to take is not as readily available at the moment.
The cause of the shortage traces back to Abbott’s interim closure of its formula manufacturing plant in Michigan, and its subsequent recall of all it’s particular formula that is produced at the plant.
The plant was re-opened back on June 4th and its certain types of formula should be a lot more available before too long.
