A newly passed provincial Act aims to eliminate race-based barriers preventing people from accessing government programs and services.
Introduced in early May, the Anti-Racism Data Act was passed unanimously in Legislature and put in to law yesterday.
In partnership with Indigenous and racialized Peoples and communities, the Province will begin collecting intersectional demographic data such as age, gender identity, and ethnic origin.
According to the province, that data will help break down barriers stemming from issues such as economic status, employment, and health outcomes.
Under the act, safeguards will be put in place to protect data gathered, with ministries required to follow careful guidelines on how data can be shared.
An anti-racism data committee will be formed in the coming months to determine key priorities, and how to gather data effectively.
