Today marks the one year anniversary of the release of the preliminary findings of the investigation in to the Kamloops Residential School.
That search found 215 unmarked graves, known as Le Estcwicwe’y, or the Missing.
Since then, numerous investigations have been launched across the country, discovering countless other unmarked graves at former Residential School sites.
During a ceremony which drew hundreds on Monday, Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Chief Rosanne Casimir said that further investigation is required before exhumation can begin.
She says it was the missing children that brought all of Canada together, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to grapple with the shock, loss, and tragedy uncovered.
Premier John Horgan says it is they who remind us of the responsibility to uncover the truth of Canada’s colonial history, and to face the continued inter-generational trauma.
