Bats and humans have not had a good couple of years when it comes to spreading diseases, and Interior Health is warning residents to keep their distance.
According to the health authority, between four and eight percent of bats that come in to contact with humans in BC test positive for rabies.
Treatment for rabies involved a two-week regiment of vaccinations, which the disease is almost always fatal without.
Residents are being advised to: stay away from bats, dead or alive, batproof their homes by properly screening vents and covering holes, vaccinating pets against rabies, and allowing bats to leave homes on their own through windows.
If you are scratched or bit by a bat, you should immediately wash the wound with soap and water before calling a local health unit or emergency department.
