A new change to the Tahltan Central Government’s Predator Management Policy has been announced.
As of April 1st, the harvest incentive on black bears has been removed, in an effort to have members focus on hunting wolves, due to the higher risk they pose to hooved animals.
As a result of these changes, the wolf incentive has been doubled from $500 to $1,000 every harvest.
However, the Grizzly Bear incentive remains in place and the government is encouraging residents to hunt them as well in order to reduce the pressure on the caribou population.
This Predator management policy was created to give incentives to Tahltan members to use their constitutionally protected hunting rights to harvest some of the predatory animals in the area.
