Today, the Nisga’a Lisims Government announced a temporary pause on one-time treaty loan repayment gifts.
In December of last year, they announced plans to distribute one-time payments of $2,500 to Nisga’a citizens registered under the Final Agreement.
Distribution of those gifts began in mid-December, and to date, payments have been sent out to 93 percent of registered Nisga’a citizens.
But, in a meeting last week, the NLG decided to temporarily halt distribution of the payments.
Now, the NLG is working with local Nisga’a offices to produce reconciliation reports which will advise a review.
Those reports will include the return of unpaid gift allocations to the NLG which were not claimed, or returned to the office as a result of unknown addresses.
Part of the process will also ensure anomalies, such as duplicated payments, are corrected.
According to the NLG, some missed payments are also due to incorrect, or unknown addresses, and they are emphasizing the importance of keeping your address information current.
Once the review is complete, the NLG will begin redistributing payments to the remaining 7 percent of Nisga’a citizens.
