Last week, Patty Hajdu was able to complete her first visit to BC since becoming Canada’s Minister of Indigenous Services.
During the week, Hajdu met with the leaders of First Nations communities impacted by the pandemic and recent weather emergencies in order to discuss shared priorities, challenges faced during the year, and supports needed in the coming months.
She also attended the Union of BC Indian Chiefs’ Meeting virtually to give an address about the affects of climate change, the opioid crisis and the pandemic on First Nations communities.
During the meeting, the minister re-affirmed Canada’s commitment to working with Indigenous representation to deal with these issues.
Hajdu also issued support for Residential School survivors, and the Nations and organizations in the midst of searching former sites for unmarked graves.
