Thanks to a provincial reconsideration process, multiple changes have been made to the Environmental Assessment Certificate for the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Project.
These changes were announced by Energy Minister, Bruce Ralston and Climate Change Minister George Heyman, with input from the Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, as well as the City of Vancouver.
In March of 2020, the Environmental Assessment Office underwent a review of the certificate, following changes made in 2018 and 2019.
Those changes came as the result of a Federal Court of Appeal decision to reconsider the project after marine shipping aspects were not considered.
After the criteria for the revisions was set by the Environmental Assessment Office, the reconsideration process was used to determine the adjustments.
Following the changes, Trans Mountain will be required to provide research updates on a 5 year interval, include the role of each authority in health risk reports following marine spills, and develop a shoreline baseline data report with consultation from involved parties.
In addition, the certificate will now include a definition for Potentially Affected Coastal Local Governments.
