A strategy to search the site of the former Lejac Residential School for unmarked graves is being developed by the Nadleh Whut’en First Nation.
In a release from today, the Nation says the work must be done in a strategic way, with a proper plan, resources, and supports in place.
Some work has already be done at the site, including the excavation and removal of waste left behind when the buildings were demolished.
During this time, the site was monitored by the Nadleh Whut’en, with site access restricted, something the Nation says will continue.
Ground penetrating radar will be used along with other methods, but the Nation says the process should be undertaken methodically, with considerations for criminal investigations, and impacts on survivors.
Nation leadership is moving forward with the process, with support from survivors, members, the province, and Ottawa.
