Dozens gathered in front of the Quesnel courthouse yesterday to demand justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Family members, friends, and strangers all came together prior to the start of a trial which sees 51-year-old Joseph Simpson charged with the murder of 33-year-old Carmelita Abraham.
Abraham, who was a member of the Takla Nation was reported missing in early January, before her body was discovered days later at the Willow Inn in Quesnel.
It was just the latest in a long line of tragic incidents involving Indigenous women in Canada, and the North in general.
Those who gathered sported signs and banners, and joined in drumming, singing, and speeches, prior to the trial’s start.
Simpson will appear in court again on March 15th.
