A report in to correctional facilities in Canada presented troubling information, which many have known for generations.
A large portion of the annual report, tabled by the Office of the Correctional Investigator last week, focuses on use of force.
It brings forward what the report itself calls irrefutable evidence of the overuse of force against Indigenous inmates.
In the 2019-2020 fiscal year, Indigenous people were the target of more us of force events than any other group.
Indigenous people are involved in 39 percent of use of force incidents, despite making up just 28 percent of the population of federal corrections facilities, and 5 percent of the general population.
Since 2017, the numbers have been steadily climbing, with Indigenous people being the target of more incidents every year since.
Among the general prison population, use of force events have also been on the rise since 2017, despite the introduction of strategies aimed at reducing them.
