Two First Nations on BC’s coast will be able to better respond to marine emergencies, thanks to two new coast guard vessels.
Both the Quatsino First Nation, on Vancouver Island, and the Kitasoo Xai-xais Nation on the Central Coast, will benefit from the dedicated vessels.
Both Nations are members of the Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary, who work and train with the Canadian Coast Guard in their territories.
On the Central Coast, the Kitasoo Nation’s new 30-foot vessel is titled the Mousewoman, will support efforts around the Great Bear Rain forest.
Both vessels will operate under the Canadian Coast Guard’s Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Pilot Program.
