A unique species of slug found mostly on Haida Gwaii is at risk of becoming endangered.
Found on Graham and Moresby Island, the Haida Gwaii Slug is only found in one other part of the world: a small section of Vancouver Island.
According to a recent report, released by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, the slugs are under threat from a number of human-caused factors.
Extensive logging in the area, combined with climate change, have wreaked havoc on their habitat, according to the report.
On top of that, the human-introduced Sitka black-tailed deer’s feeding habits also eliminate cover and moisture from the ecosystem.
In the report, a number of recommendations are put forward to protect the slugs, including: the establishment of a habitat protection plan, and restricting the number of black-tailed deer in the area.
