Even since it began snowing, the City of Prince George has been dealing with a trend of events more unfortunate than your average snowstorm.
Since the beginning of last November, Prince George’s vehicle theft rate has risen by 50 percent and the main thing that these robberies have in common are that the vehicles were left unlocked with the keys in the ignition as they were warming up.
While letting your vehicle run in cold temperatures to warm up is just another part winter, the lack of a remote starter or some other kind of security measure makes the vehicles that are left unlocked and running extremely enticing for would-be thieves.
Another fact about these crimes that have changed is that while most of these thefts occurred in parking lots in 2020, 75 percent of stolen vehicles are just being taken straight from driveways in 2022, and none of these vehicles were left alone for more than 15 minutes.
