More than 454 thousand hectares of Crown Land in the South Peace are being cut off from snowmobilers to protect caribou.
That covers land in 13 of 21 identified riding areas, though 71 percent of areas remain open to riders.
While winterized motor vehicle recreation is not the primary threat to caribou recovery, it can disturb or displace the animals, and place unnecessary stress on them.
These factors can make the animals vulnerable to predators in the area.
The BC Caribou Recovery Program has invested 150 thousand dollars in helping local snowmobile clubs plan enhancement projects outside of the management areas.
