Carrier Sekani Family Services are reminding everyone that the fight for Indigenous child welfare is about more than just money.
Earlier this week, Ottawa announced plans to set aside 40 billion dollars to compensate First Nations children, and improve the child welfare system.
But, even that funding is not final, and is contingent on Canada reaching an agreement in accordance with Human Rights Tribunal Orders.
In addition to compensation, that Tribunal ordered Canada to ensure an end to systemic Indigenous discrimination in the child welfare system.
CSFS, along with other Indigenous organizations, say negotiations will continue until all children have the support they need to reach their full potential.
That means ensuring the proper mechanisms are in place to prevent issues of systemic Indigenous discrimination from continuing to arise.
